Honda Had Highest Fleet Fuel Economy and Largest Fuel Economy Gain Among Major Full-Line Automakers for Model Year 2012 in New EPA Report

American Honda had the highest fleet-average fuel economy, largest year-over-year fuel economy increase and lowest CO2 emissions of any full-line automaker in the U.S. for model year 2012, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its just-released fuel-economy trends report, "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2013."

Among major automakers selling cars, trucks and luxury vehicles in the U.S., American Honda -- including both the Honda and Acura automobile brands -- achieved the highest fleet-average fuel economy of 26.6 miles per gallon for 2012, representing a 9.7 percent, or 2.5 mpg, increase over 2011 results.

Moreover, while achieving top-level fuel economy performance, American Honda also is leading in the area of automobile safety with seven models that achieve a top safety pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety – the 2013 Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe, the 2013 Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe, the 2014 Odyssey minivan, and the 2013 Acura TL performance-luxury sedan, the most of any automaker.

Last month, the 2014 Accord was chosen as the 2013 "Green Car of the Year" by the editor's of Green Car Journal. At 50 mpg, the 2014 Accord Hybrid has the highest EPA city fuel-economy rating of any five-passenger sedan sold in America.

5 Engine Oil Myths

We all know that our cars need engine oil in order to operate smoothly. The role of engine oil is to keep the moving parts of the engine lubricated, to protect them against rust corrosion, and -- with modern detergent oil additives -- to keep them free of sludge and general engine gunk.
But most of us also know some things about engine oil that aren't actually true. For instance, isn't it always necessary to change your oil every 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers)? And when the color of your oil starts becoming dark, doesn't that mean that it's about to fill your engine with harmful sludge?

Well, no. These ideas are myths and over the next few pages we'll debunk them, along with a few other engine oil "facts" that don't happen to be true. A little knowledge isn't necessarily a dangerous thing, but a little knowledge that doesn't happen to be true could quite possibly ruin your engine, or at least cost you a lot of unnecessary expense.

From One Second To The Next A Film By Werner Herzog

Shows the Consequences of Texting While Driving

This past August, legendary filmmaker and historian Werner Herzog released "From One Second to the Next", a short, but poignant look into the consequences of texting while driving.

The film is a PSA sponsored by four major phone companies-- AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, who originally approached Herzog to make the film in an effort to combat a growing cultural phenomenon where texting-related accidents are becoming increasingly all too common.

For Herzog, it's a sharp turn outside the norm from his usual works, which often focus on themes of isolation and wilderness, as can be seen in films like "Grizzly Man" and "Encounters At the End of the World". Nonetheless, "From One Second to the Next" is as much an accomplishment in cinema as it is an important message that should be adopted by anyone who gets behind a wheel.

Car Tip of the Week: Check the tread on your tires using only a penny.

You can use nothing but a penny from your pocket to determine if the tires on your vehicle are both LEGAL and SAFE to drive on! Almost every state mandates that all passenger car tires meet a minimum tire tread depth of 2/32" measured from the top of the tread wear indicator to the top of the tread. You can locate the tread wear indicator as it appears in the tread grooves as a small bump. It just so happens that the lettering on a penny that is right over Abe Lincoln's head is exactly 2/32". If you place the penny on top of the tread wear indicator and the letters over Lincoln’s head are visible, that indicates your tires have inadequate tread and it’s time for a new set. The good news is that you used nothing but a penny to prevent a potentially devastating event and ensure the safety of yourself, as well as everyone else on the road around you.

The meaning behind the "Civic."

According to Webster’s dictionary, the word “civic” means “of or relating to a citizen, a city, citizenship or civil affairs.” And so it was that the Honda Civic made its world debut in 1972, a year of great advancement in motorization in Japan. As its name suggests, the Civic incorporated Honda’s wish to create “a car for all people, a car for the world.” Ever since, the Civic has embodied Honda’s challenging spirit, always ahead of the pack and always delivering new levels of value. Now, 33 years since its launch, the Civic is sold in approximately 160 nations and regions worldwide. The Civic is truly a car for the global citizen and continues to earn the support and love of people around the world.

Maintenance Tip Monday

Lights

One indicator or blinker is flashing faster than the other

When you indicate one way and the blinker flashes quicker than when you indicate the other way, it means one of the bulbs has blown. An auto parts store will be able to tell you what sort of bulb you need to replace it with and your manual should show you how to get at the indicator bulbs - they're different on every car.

Don't touch the glass when changing headlight bulbs

Most headlight bulbs now are filled with halogen and have special coatings on the outside of the glass. If you pick the bulb up by the glass with your fingers, you will leave trace amounts of oil and grease on the glass. When the bulb is used, that area of the glass will get hotter than the rest and it will eventually cause the bulb to crack. When changing headlight bulbs, only hold the metal bulb holder at the base, or make sure you're wearing rubber surgical / mechanic's gloves (clean ones) if you're touching the glass.

Gov. Cuomo announces tougher penalties for texting while driving

NEW YORK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced tougher penalties for drivers caught texting behind the wheel.

Drivers caught texting while driving will get five points on their license – an increase from the current penalty of three points. Cuomo is also backing legislation that would see drivers with junior or probation licenses receive a 60-day suspension for texting.

"We want the message to be very clear to young drivers,” says the governor. “Don't do it. Don't think about doing it. And if they are doing it - we want to catch them when they're young.”

The governor has called for a summerlong crackdown on texting while driving. State police have been ordered to increase patrols and will be out in force starting this weekend. The new penalties take effect Saturday.

The 2013 Honda Accord, Odyssey and CR-V were all named to KBB.com's list of the 10 Best Family Cars of 2013. The three family-friendly Honda models were recognized for their leadership in the key areas of safety, roominess, comfort and value.

"Honda prides itself in designing vehicles around the needs of our customers," said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. "There's no better validation for this effort than being recognized for having vehicles that excel in the areas critical to the family buyer."

All-new for 2013, the Honda Accord was the top ranked sedan on KBB.com's list of family vehicles and had the lowest 5-Year Cost to Own(1) among the ten recognized vehicles. 2013 Honda Civic Sedan Leads All Small Cars in Safety Ratings with Top NHTSA and IIHS Crash Scores

The new 2013 Honda Civic Sedan, the most popular small car among individual buyers, has received the highest possible overall safety ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2013 Civic Sedan recently received the top 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score in the NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), and the highest possible rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS, including a top score of GOOD in the new small overlap frontal collision test.

Honda leads all automakers with every one of its tested model year 2013 vehicles earning a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS.

The 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe are the first and only small cars to earn the IIHS' highest safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK+, and the NCAP 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for the Civic Sedan further separates Civic from the competition in safety ratings performance.  The 2013 Accord also earned these high safety ratings in the midsize segment.

"Car shoppers cannot find a small car with higher overall safety ratings than the 2013 Honda Civic," said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics at American Honda. "Safety ratings leadership across product lines is a fundamental part of not only our strategic business plan, but also our philosophy as a company."

The Civic Sedan, significantly reengineered for 2013, is equipped with Honda's  next  generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which plays a critical role in making Civic the first small car to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ crash safety rating, and the first to earn the highest rating of GOOD in the IIHS' new small overlap frontal crash test (sometimes called a 'narrow offset' test). This aggressive test is designed to simulate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole at high speed. The reinforced ACE™ body structure found on the 2013 Civic further enhances frontal crash energy through a wider range of these offset and oblique collision scenarios.

Additional standard safety equipment on all Civic models include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control; an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); side curtain airbags; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; and driver and front passenger side airbags.

Honda Safety Leadership
Under the banner of "Safety for Everyone," Honda has a long history of leadership in the development and application of advanced technologies and designs to enhance the safety of all road users, including automobile occupants, motorcycle riders, and pedestrians. The company operates two of the world's most sophisticated crash test facilities and is responsible for numerous pioneering efforts in the areas of crashworthiness, airbag technology, collision compatibility and pedestrian safety. This commitment to safety is rooted in Honda's goal to be a company that society wants to exist, and it complements the company's leadership in reducing vehicle emissions, improving fuel efficiency and advancing alternatives to gasoline.

Honda To Be Partnering Sponsor in 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

As a further extension of its growing commitment to grassroots racing in North America, Honda announced today that it is making a major commitment to the 2013 running of the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, as both a sponsor and race participant, with plans to field products in nine race classes, a first for any OEM in a single Pikes Peak event.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. will serve as the Partnering Sponsor for the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the first time the company has participated as a corporate sponsor of the legendary race event. The 91st running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is scheduled for June 30, 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

"Pikes Peak presents us with a unique opportunity to showcase Honda's diverse product lineup and to energize Honda fans around world, as we work to further strengthen Honda's presence in racing at all levels," said Mike Accavitti, Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations for American Honda. "Our associates will be working hard between now and Race Day to prepare this diverse field of race vehicles and showcase the Honda racing spirit."

With support from Honda's North American R&D and motorsports companies – Honda R&D Americas, Inc. and Honda Performance Development, Inc. – the company will campaign a broad range of Honda and Acura vehicles, as well as Honda motorcycles and ATVs. Honda will showcase its diverse range of fun-to-drive/ride products and will field 10 products in nine race classes, the most ever for a single race participant.

Along with Honda IndyCar team Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports pilot Simon Pagenaud, the vehicles will be developed and piloted by Honda's North American associates, under the banners of Honda Performance Development (HPD) and Team-Honda Research (THR). Pagenaud's Pikes Peak vehicle entry and racing class will be announced at a later date.

As a further extension of Honda's sponsorship effort, Honda Power Equipment will be supporting race operations, with Honda generators providing electricity and light to the pits and staging area.

Honda 2013 Pikes Peak entries:
Honda has competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on a less ambitious scale in the recent past. In 2011, Honda campaigned a Fit hatchback that was built and piloted by Honda engineers from North America. In 2012, the company fielded an Acura NSX powered by an ALMS P2 twin-turbo V-6 engine supplied by Honda Performance Development (HPD), and outfitted with an ex-Le Mans body and wide body kit, with support from members of the Ohio-based Honda of America Race Team (HART). Prior to that, Honda set records in the EV class in 1994 and 1999 with the Honda EV Plus. This year also marks the return of advanced Honda EV technology to America's second-oldest race, in the form of a 2013 Honda Fit EV.
