Honda working on nine-speed automatic transmission?

Zf-9hp-628
Honda may be out to improve the fuel economy of its powertrains by throwing extra gears into the transmission. Automobile Magazine reports the Japanese automaker is currently working to use a new nine-speed gearbox developed by ZF in its products as soon as 2014. If you're keeping track, this is the same transmission set to debut in a host of Chrysler products, including the replacement for the Jeep Liberty.

Despite the additional gears, ZF says the transmission is surprisingly compact, thanks in part to the fact that it uses planetary gears in place of a traditional design. Called the 9HP, the German transmission can be used in either front- or all-wheel drive applications and handle up to 354 pound-feet of torque.

All told, ZF claims the 9HP can improve a vehicle's fuel economy as much as 10 to 16 percent. Given the torque capacities and relatively small size, the transmission could show up in nearly everything Honda makes, but odds are the company will debut the gearbox in models like the Odyssey and Pilot as well as the Acura MDX and TL.

Paragon Honda - (4.8) Star on DealerRater

  • In February I purchased my first car! I was fortunate enough to have meet Camilla who made the experience effortless. She was very patient and was available to answer all my questions as they arised. My intention was not to purchase a car, I just went in to take a look at what my options were since Paragon was highly recommended by cousin. She was truly a pleasure to work with as well as the rest of the staff there. -Diana P.

2012 Honda Fit Wins Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek $16,000 Subcompact Shootout

46_2012_fit
The 2012 Honda Fit has won the Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek $16,000 Subcompact Shootout. Honda's versatile and fuel-efficient Fit took the top spot in a competition among seven popular subcompact cars that seat at least four, have four doors, get at least 35 mpg on the highway, and can be purchased for less than $16,000. Experts from Cars.com, USA Today and "MotorWeek" tested these subcompacts to measure all of the needs of the average car-buyer including gas mileage, practicality, user features and comfort.

"We are thrilled to have the exceptional package that is the Honda Fit recognized by such a well-respected group of automotive media," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "To have topped such a wide group of competition in such a thorough, real-world evaluation demonstrates that Honda versatility, value and fun are standard even in our most affordable model."

"As gas prices and used-car prices continue to rise, a shootout like this acts as a guide for consumers looking to purchase a new subcompact as an alternative to a used vehicle," said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com. "In addition to confident handling, a solid transmission, great visibility and unmatched practicality, the Honda Fit is just fun to drive and emerged as our clear winner."

Beyond this latest Cars.com/USA TODAY/MotorWeek shootout win, the 2012 Honda Fit is also an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK and received the 2012 Residual Value Award from ALG. The Fit topped the J.D. Power and Associates' Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) for 2011 in its segment, and is a six-time winner of Car and Driver magazine's "10Best Cars" award, having garnered this accolade every year it has been on sale in the U.S.

Cars.com is an award-winning online destination for car shoppers that offers information from consumers and experts to help buyers formulate opinions on what to buy, where to buy and how much to pay for a car. Launched in June 1998, Cars.com is a division of Classified Ventures LLC, which is owned by leading media companies.

Paragon Honda - (5) Star Review on DealerRater

  • I am writing this to express my satisfaction with my sales person Esa Popal. After getting the run around at another Honda Dealership, it was refreshing to be assisted by Mr. Popal's straight forward approach. There were a lot of Civics to chose from and he patiently helped my sort through which one was the best for me. He let me test drive each car I wanted to drive without hesitating (Other dealerships I went to wouldn't let me drive a car unless I would commit to buying it first!). He gave me a few pointers on selecting a car that were very useful. When I picked up the car, it had a scratch that had gone unnoticed by me and the Honda dealership, Mr Popal had it touched up while I waited. Overall the level of service I received from him was top rate and far exceeded any of the salesmen from the 4 other dealerships I went to. -liisamarie

2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas Keys Netted by NHL Star George Parros

2012_civic_natural_gas_01
Honda presented the keys to a 2012 Civic Natural Gas to Anaheim Ducks NHL star George Parros at the American Honda campus yesterday in Torrance, Calif. Under an agreement with American Honda, Parros will drive the Civic Natural Gas to create awareness of the vehicle amongst his Ducks teammates and fans.

Awarded the 2012 Green Car of the Year®, the  Civic Natural Gas is the only OEM-built, CNG-powered passenger car for sale in the U.S. Now available at 197 dealers in 36 states, the 2012 Civic Natural Gas is powered by the cleanest internal-combustion engine certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Tier-II, Bin-2 and ILEV certification as of August 2010). The Civic Natural Gas currently qualifies for a state-issued decal allowing single-occupant access to High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) "carpool" lanes in California and several other states.

"George is an ideal representative for the Honda Civic Natural Gas vehicle and embodies many of Honda's core attributes; he has a strong sense for environmental issues, is value driven, and is active in his community," explained Steve Center, vice president of the Environmental Business Development Office at American Honda. "To help George with his daily commute to the Honda Center, he will be replacing his previous generation natural gas powered Honda Civic with the all-new 2012 model, featuring enhanced exterior and interior styling, improved fuel economy and a refueling price typically 30 percent less than gasoline."

Parros, 32, is in his sixth season with the Anaheim Ducks (seventh in the NHL), having played on the Stanley Cup-winning 2007 team. The popular right wing (#16) and Princeton grad joined the NHL in 2005, and is well recognized by hockey fans thanks to his 6-foot 5-inch, 228-pound frame and unique mustache.

This is the second natural gas powered Civic Parros has received from Honda, having begun his first stint in October 2010. Parros is also the second Anaheim Duck player to drive one of Honda's alternative fuel vehicles. The first was former Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer, who became an FCX Clarity fuel-cell electric vehicle customer in January 2010.

Paragon Honda - (4.8) Star Review on DealerRater

  • My name is William Rodriguez, I decided to buy a used vehicle for my wife, we found a decent car, for a decent price (2009 Honda Accord Maroon), the person who took care of us, was very attentive, professional. I liked his approach, the way he treated us, the way he explained to us the whole process, very honest and the most important thing, with respect every step of the way, from begining to the end of our visit. We got everything as promise. Excellent salesman. We will return and we will ask for him. Great Service. -WilliamRod

Honda wants dealers to have natural gas fuel stations

Civicx-wide-community
Honda, the only automaker selling compressed natural gas-powered cars in the U.S., wants some of its dealers to also install fueling station pumps to sell CNG.

Honda has said it wants to double sales of its Civic natural gas sedans this year to 4,000, and greater CNG acceptance is going to require more public fueling stations, Steve Center, U.S. vice president for environmental business development, said in an interview.

Honda is negotiating with state regulators in California, the biggest U.S. market for CNG vehicles and the one with the most public fueling stations, seeking to have additional pumps placed at two or more Honda dealerships this year, Center said.

"If the dealer had a fueling station, it would really reduce some of that concern for the customer," Center said at Honda's U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif. "It's not our place to create infrastructure, but it's a chicken-and-egg situation, and we're going to have to nurse that egg along."

Honda's push to market its Indiana-built Civics powered by CNG -- a domestically sourced fuel that's cheaper than gasoline and has lower emissions -- comes as Detroit rivals Gerneral Motors and Chrysler announced this week that they will start selling bi-fuel pickups that run on CNG and gasoline.

Honda CR-V earns high marks among best family cars

Dai-2012-honda-cr-v-3
Ferris Bueller doesn’t come off as much of a family man, but apparently his latest car would be perfect for it.

Kelly Blue Book named the East Liberty-built 2012 Honda CR-V, the car for which Matthew Broderick reprised his role as Ferris Bueller to hawk during the Super Bowl, as one of its 10 best family cars.

The CR-V ranked fifth on the list and garnered praise for its more contemporary design, a rear-seat entertainment system and improved fuel economy. Those are features Honda Motor Co. Ltd.  (NYSE:HMC) highlighted when it unveiled the newest model of the crossover sport-utility vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The company said the vehicle has more space inside, handles better and includes more safety features than previous generations. Production began in late November and the 2012 CR-V hit showroom floors in mid-December.

Honda already has started to see sales improvements after the update. In January, the company sold 18,960 of the crossover SUV, up 16 percent from 16,339 sold in January 2010.

Sales of the Honda Civic, ranked eighth on the Kelly Blue Book list, also took off in the first month of the year, improving by 49.5 percent to 21,883 sales.

Kelly Blue Book touted the 2012 Civic’s new fuel economy display and affordability as keys to its ranking.

The Odyssey van was the highest rated Honda on the list, ranking No. 2 among the best family cars behind only the Volkswagon Passat.
