Great news for Honda and the auto industry as a whole.  American Honda Motor Co. said that May sales in the U.S. rose 47.6 percent from the same month a year earlier, led by strong jumps in sales of its Accord and Civic sedans. The company reported combined Honda and Acura brand numbers for the first time.

BY THE NUMBERS: Honda (including Acura) sold 133,997 vehicles last month compared with 90,773 in May 2011. Sales of Honda cars and trucks rose 46 percent to 119,411, while Acura sales rose 62.1 percent to 14,586.

TOP SELLERS: The company sold 33,490 Civics, up 82.6 percent from a year earlier. It also sold 29,737 Accords, up by 74.7 percent. Sales of its CR-V small SUV rose 54.4 percent to 25,186.

Quite a few other automakers reported that sales were up for 2012.  With the summer month here, the surge in auto sales could continue as dealers offer sales to get the consumer into the cars.
